Gardening "under the beech umbrella" provides a real challenge of shade and drought-one we have not yet solved. The garden is at its best before the leaves of our very large beech tree appear: rhodedendrons, magnolia, bluebells and spring bulbs. By summer we are grateful to those plants that stay the course: ferns, hostas, acer, variegated foliage and shrubs in the borders surrounding the lawn, whilst our new patio provides the chance to pot up some temporary colour. The shady path leads to a sunken lawn and the rose bed.
